Gandhicam for Android installation instructions

Introduction

As Gandhicam for Android is still in development it is not yet available through the Android Market. We fully intend to make it available through the Market as soon as the code settles down a bit and we have a working stable 1.0 version, however.

In the mean-time you may install the app without using the Market, using the method below. In general, you should be careful when you install non-Market apps - although to our knowledge there has not been an incident yet of deliberate malware or an Android virus/trojan, it is theoretically possible. Apps available through the market have usually been inspected by Google to ensure they are safe and trustworthy, but no such protections apply to non-market apps.

For this reason - in general - be careful, only download apps from sources you trust and pay close attention to the permissions each app asks for when you try to install it - only allow apps which ask for permissions you feel they have a good reason to need.

Caveats aside, please follow the instructions below to install Gandhicam for Android:

Enable non-market applications

  1. Go to the Settings app
  2. Choose "Applications"
  3. Ensure "Unknown sources (allow install of non-Market applications)" is checked

Install Gandhicam

  1. On your handset, go the the Android Market and install the AppsInstaller application - this will allow you to easily install downloaded .apk files (Google Android applications) from your SD card.
  2. Download the Gandhicam for Android .apk file to your SD card (either by viewing this page on your device and clicking the link above, or by downloading the .apk file on a desktop computer and copying it to your SD card).
  3. Install the downloaded app - either; click on the "Gandhicam.apk" download notification in your notification bar, or run AppsInstaller on your phone, let it scan the SD card for apps, select the Gandhcam option, then click install.
  4. Your device should now install Gandhicam for Google Android.

Configuration

Please note that, for your privacy, in its default state Gandhicam is set not to upload anything (images, video or audio) - you should run the app and select both an upload type/destination and select which media types you would like to upload to it.

Currently e-mail and HTTP (website) upload are available, but we also aim to add MMS and social media website integration (Flickr, Facebook, etc) in the near future.

Detailed instructions, downloads and source code will soon be forthcoming for setting up your own (public or private) HTTP upload destinations on your own or public servers, but in the mean-time (for the technically-proficient in the audience) for openness and simplicity Gandhicam HTTP uploading uploads files and any attached metadata as a standard HTTP POST form request, to the HTTP POST URL specified in its configuration.
